The legendary music composer and veteran carnatic musician V. Dakshinamoorthy (Venkateswaran Dakshinamoorthy) passed away on Friday (02-08-2013). He composed songs for Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi films and he has set scores for the songs in over 125 films. He has to his credit as many as 859 songs composed over a period of 50 years.
Dakshinamoorthy debuted in the film industry with Nalla Thanka, produced by Kunchacko and K. V. Koshy under the banner of K & K Productions. The hero of the film was Augustin Joseph, father of renowned singer K. J. Yesudas.
His evergreen compositions include Swapnangal... Swapnangale ningal... (Kavyamela), Pattu padiyurakkan njan... (Seetha), Uthara swayamvaram... (Danger Biscuit), Kattile pazhmulam... (Vilaykku Vangiya Veena) and Vathil pazhuthilooden... (Idanazhiyil Oru Kalocha). The Duo Sreekumaran Thampy (Lyricist) and Dakshinamoothy worked together for more than 50 films and they created the maximum number of super hit songs. Some of the popular songs from this team include 'Hridaya sarasile pranaya pushpame,' 'Vaikkathashtami nalil,' 'Arattinanakal ezhunnalli,' 'Tharaka roopini,' 'Manohari nin manoradhathil' and 'Uthara swayamvaram kathakali kanuvan.'
In 1971 he won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director. In 2003, he received the coveted 'Sangeetha Saraswathi' Award. In the year 2008, he composed 4 songs for the Malayalam Movie Mizhikal Sakshi.
