Mobile Handsets without IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) Number will be banned from December-1, 2009. Indian Cellular Association, an organization of mobile phone service providers gave this warning to all mobile users of India.
IMEI is a 15-digit code which appears on the operator’s network whenever a call is made. The IMEI number helps authorities track users and Mobiles phones without IMEI number are considered a grave security threat and concerns had been raised over their usage after recent terrorist attacks.
The Department of Telecommunications had earlier asked operators to disconnect services to handset that does not have a IMEI number. Most of the Chinese mobile handsets will be banned in India because they do not have the IMEI number.
By pressing *#o6#, the IMEI number will be displayed on the screen. We can check the credibility of IMEI number by sending SMS to 57886.
For that just type
