Kerala Governor and three times Chief Minister of the UnionTerritory of Pondicherry, died on 26 Dec 2012.
Farook had been undergoing treatment at Appolo hospital in Chennai for the past few days.He was appointed as Governor of Kerala on 25 August 2011.

Farook was thrice elected to the Lok Sabha from Pondicherry in 1991, 1996 and 1999 and served as a Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism during June 1991- December 1992. He was appointed as the Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in September 2004.In 2010, Farook was appointed as Governor of Jharkhand.

Kerala Government declared Public holiday on 27-01-2012 in the state for Government offices and Educational institutions.

GADDAFI WAS KILLED BY THE REBELS

The longest-ruling leader of Libya, from 1969 when he seized power in a military coup, was shot and killed by the rebels on Thursday (20 October 2011) in his hometown of Sirte after weeks of heavy fighting. Al Jazeera reported that the National Transitional Council military chief had confirmed that Gaddafi had died of wounds following his capture. The body of the former Libyan leader was taken to a location which is being kept secret for security reasons, an NTC official said. His son Mutassim was also found dead in Sirte.

Gaddafi, who ruled Libya for 42 years, was captured by the rebels who shot him and injured him severely with bullets. Celebrations broke out on the streets of Tripoli on news of capture of Gaddafi.

After seizing power in 1969, he abolished the Libyan Constitution of 1951 and imposed laws based on the political ideology he had formulated, called the Third International Theory.

MALAYALAM MUSIC DIRECTOR JOHNSON MASTER PASSED AWAY

Noted Malayalam Music Director who combined native South Indian melodic patterns with the harmonic structure of European classical music, died at Chennai on August 18, 2011 due to a heart attack. He started his career as an assistant to G. Devarajan in 1970s and debuted as an independent composer in late seventies with Aaravam which was directed by Bharathan. Koodevide was his first venture with noted director Padmarajan, which had one of the most famous songs of Johnson "Aadivaa Kaatte”. Johnson worked for 17 films with Padmarajan, including his last film “Njan Gandharvan” which has heart touching songs “Devi athamaragmekan” and “Devanganagal Kayyozhinja Tharakam”. Another notable collaboration of Johnson was with director Sathyan Anthikkad, with whom he associated in almost 25 films.

Johnson won his first National Award in 1994 for the movie Ponthan Mada (1993). The next year he got his second award for Sukrutham. Both the awards were for the background score in films. Johnson is fondly called Johnson Master (Johnson Mashu) by Malayalee audiences composed for about 300 films.

INTERESTING FACT:
In 2004, Johnson Master sang the song "Theekuruvi" from Kangalal Kaidhu Sei, which was composed by A. R. Rahman. Perhaps it is the only song recorded by him for any composer.

Prithviraj made his debut in 2002 in the Malayalam film Nandanam directed by Renjth, and has starred in more than fifty films. His notable films are Swapnakoodu (2003), Classmates (2006), Thirakkatha (2008) and Urumi (2011)

Prithviraj made his Tamil debut through Kana Kandaen in 2005 as a sophisticated villain. His latest release in Tamil is Mani Ratnam's Raavanan, co-starring Vikram and Aishwarya Rai. Prithviraj debuted as a singer in Puthiya Mukham (2009) by singing the title song of the film, "Kaane Kaane". SINGER K.S.CHITRA'S DAUGHTER DROWNED IN DUBAI

Why Fate is so cruel sometimes? Famous Playback singer K.S Chithra's only daughter Nandana(8 year old) drowned in a swimming pool in Emirates Hills, Dubai. Chitra and daughter have arrived at Dubai to be part of a musical show. (AR Rahman Special Hits Concert, Dubai on April 14, 2011). AR Rahman' sister A.R Rehana, Hariharan, Sadhna Sargam, Benny Dayal, Sayanora, Raihanah, Fathima, Issrath, Neha Nair, Naresh Iyer, Aslam, Dr Narayan, Dilshad, Vijayprakash and other singers and celebrities came to UAE to participate in the concert organised with his famous songs.
KS Chitra and family were preparing to go out for rehearsals of the event in the morning. They saw that the Front door was left open and that Nandana was not inside the house. They went outside and saw Nandana lying in the swimming pool. They took her out from the pool, and rushed her to the hospital. But she was already dead.

KS Chitra is currently 47 years old and she had received her daughter Nandana in 2002. Chitra always used to say that she got Nandana after praying for 15 years to Lord Krishna.
May God give all the strength to Chitra and family to recover from the shock!

March 24, 2011 is the 137th birth day of legendary American magician Harry Houdini. He was a Hungarian-born American magician and escapologist, stunt performer, actor and film producer noted for his sensational escape acts. He built his career on demonstrating the ability to escape from a huge variety of restraints and difficult situations.

Houdini often concealed the exact details of his escapes to maintain an air of mystery and suspense. He performed tricks such as Chinese Water Torture Cell and the Metamorphosis, which are essentially classic stage illusions reliant on cleverly designed props.

Many people on Orkut receiving scraps form their friends with words “Bom Sabado!” Remember, these scraps are sent without the consent of Orkut profile owner. Bom Sabado is a Worm which has attacked the social networking service Orkut on September 25, 2010. Orkut Officials and Security Professionals advised users not to Log in Orkut until they clean the Worm. If you’ve logged into Orkut, just clear your cache/cookies and change your Orkut password.
“Bom Sabado” means “Good Saturday” in Portuguese. This Bom Sabado worm flooding scrapbooks and also it seems to be adding affected Orkuteers to new Orkut groups/communities. Those who open the scrap get infected. Some settings are automatically changed and porn communities are added to the profile with out the consent of profile owner.
The worst thing is that the profile owner cannot unjoin from these communities and cannot report this bug to Google
Security Measures:

One of the most versatile playback singers of India, Swarnalatha, passed away at the age of 37 due to lung problems. Born in Kerala's Palakkad district, Swarnalatha had sung in various languages including Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam since 1989.

No one can forget her peppy number song “Mukkala Mukabala”from the Tamil film “Kathalan” composed by A R Rahman.
Swarnalatha, a favourite of AR Rahman and Ilayaraja, has sung nearly 6,000 songs in seven Indian languages. She made her debut in ‘Neethikku Thandanai' with the song ‘Chinnachiru Kiliye Kannamma ‘composed by M.S.Viswanathan.

Murali, Tamil film actor who appeared in leading and supporting roles throughout his career died on Wednesday (08-09-10) following a massive heart attack. He, aged 46 had acted in over 100 films, complained of chest pain this morning and was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.He is survived by his wife and two sons, including Atharva, who made his film debut recently in the film “Baana Kathadi“.

He, son of famous Kannada film director Siddalingaia, has acted with many stars including Vijaykanth, Prabhu, Sathyaraj, Prabhu Deva, Surya, Parthiban, Sarath Kumar and Mammootty. He made his debut in Tamil film in 1984 playing the lead role in “Poovilangu”, directed by Ameerjhan. His notable films are ‘Idhayam’, ‘Pudu Vasantham’, ‘Porkalam’ and ‘Sundara Travels’.

Murali won the Tamil Nadu best actor award in 2001 for his performance in Kadal Pookal. His last film was “Banna kathaadi”.

May his soul rest in peace.

Finally India launched her first web browser which has been made completely in India. The browser named Epic browser is based on the Mozilla platform, specifically customized to the taste of Indian users. Epic has several preinstalled widgets such as social networking (Face book, Orkut), chat clients (yahoo messenger) and email facilities integrated into the browser.

Hidden Reflex, a Bangalore based company has brought forth this web browser. King of light music and composer of several golden melodies, M.G.Radhakrishnan passed away after prolonged illness. He was ailing for some time with liver-related diseases.

He made his debut as a composer with director Aravindan’s movie "Thampu" (1978). His last film was "Ananthabhadram" (2005) which was directed by Santosh Sivan.

He had rendered music to many light music songs for Akashavani. Songs like “Ghanasyama Sandhya Hridayam” and ‘Odakkuzhal Vili Ozhuki Ozhuki Varum” captured the heart of all music lovers.

Noted singer M G Sreekumar is his brother and singer Dr Omanakutty is his sister.

After winning two Grammy awards, treated as the “Oscar of music”, Indian music maestro A R Rahman’s fans are eagerly waiting for another Oscar for his song "Na na" from the film "Couples Retreat". However the song has failed to bag a nomination in the original song category for the 82nd Academy Awards.

Competing with 62 songs, Rahman's "Na na" lost out to "Almost there" ("The Princess And The Frog"), "Down in new Orleons" ("The Princess And The Frog"), "Loin de Paname" ("Paris 36"), "Take it all" ("Nine") and "The weary Kind" (Crazy Heart").

After the successful introduction of pay per second by Tata DoComo, Tata Teleservices launched a new call plan. According to this plan for its CDMA users, 1 rupee (U.S. 2 cents) will be charged for five-minute local call and 2 rupees for long-distance calls of same duration.
For calls (local or long-distance) less than one minute, users would have to pay 25 paise under the new billing plan.

Yamaha RX100, the dream bike of younger generation of mid and late 1980's, will be relaunched soon with new style and standard technology.
Yamaha launched RX100 in 1985 in alliance with Escorts Ltd which has two-stroke engine that give more power and performance. RX-100 is known very well for its speed, low maintenance and other such factors. Two stroke engines allowed riders to ride the bike at very low rpm in higher gears (for instance 10 km/hr in fourth gear).
But the disappointing fact is that RX-100 was a high polluter. During 1990, new emission norms related to pollution came into effect and Yamaha and other two wheeler companies forced to withdraw their two-stroke engine vehicles.
Old RX-100 Model has high demand in the secondhand bikes category. So Yamaha decided to maintain the same design of the earlier bike but this time the model will be powered by a four stroke engine.

FIRST AUTO CLUTCH BIKE OF INDIA “JIVE” FROM TVS

Beware Hero Honda and Bajaj Fans! After the successful introduction of TVS Victor in the industry, the company was struggling with their new modals. But this venture will definitely make them proud. They launched India's first auto-clutch bike "Jive" priced at Rs.41,000, and an automatic scooter "Wego" in Chennai.

"With Jive and our other model 'Flame', our target is to have at least ten percent (of the executive bike market) in nine months. Currently our presence is very minimal in the segment." TVS Motor chairman Venu Srinivasan told reporters after the launch. He said TVS had spent Rs.25 crore on developing Jive and Rs.50 crore for Wego. The gear box for Jive comes from Indonesia, while the engine was developed in India.

Mobile Handsets without IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) Number will be banned from December-1, 2009. Indian Cellular Association, an organization of mobile phone service providers gave this warning to all mobile users of India.

IMEI is a 15-digit code which appears on the operator’s network whenever a call is made. The IMEI number helps authorities track users and Mobiles phones without IMEI number are considered a grave security threat and concerns had been raised over their usage after recent terrorist attacks.

The Department of Telecommunications had earlier asked operators to disconnect services to handset that does not have a IMEI number. Most of the Chinese mobile handsets will be banned in India because they do not have the IMEI number.

By pressing *#o6#, the IMEI number will be displayed on the screen. We can check the credibility of IMEI number by sending SMS to 57886.

For that just type

2 Paisa for 1 second for all STD calls.

Along with this special voucher, it is not possible to use other special tariff vouchers. Another interesting fact is that this scheme is not applicable for Student Scheme customers of BSNL Kerala Circle.

It is the season of small cars. Maruti introduced its seventh small-car model Ritz .
The Ritz comes with a newly developed 1.2-liter "K-Series" gasoline engine or a 1.3-liter diesel engine. The engine cc of Ritz is 1197 cc and ps is 87@6000rpm. Both the petrol and diesel engine will have four-valve-per-cylinder mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox The Company claims that its latest K12M engine offers a mileage of 17.8 kmpl in city roads and 21.8 kmpl on highway. But keep waiting whether it is true.

The car's base model will cost 390,000 rupees ($7863) at showrooms in New Delhi, while the top-end model has been priced at 499,000 rupees, Shinzo Nakanishi, managing director of Suzuki Motor Corp.'s India unit, said at a news conference. The car is some what costlier but the fuel efficiency factor will definitely resolve this factor. Let’s wait for the test drive.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) which claims a subscriber base of over 74 million started 3G telecoms services recently in 11 cities of India. They have launched this Service on commercial basis simultaneously from - Agra, Ambala, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Dehradoon, Shimla, Lucknow, Ranchi, Durgapur, Haldia, Patna & a soft launch in Jammu. BSNL had invested 27 billion rupees ($530 million) on rolling out 3G infrastructure. Only BSNL & MTNL are providing 3G services in India.

3G means the third generation of mobile communications systems which enhance the services such as multimedia, high speed mobile broadband, internet access with the ability to view video footage on your mobile handset. i.e. Mobile TV, Mobile Broadband, Video calls, Movies, Video PRBT etc will be available in these 3G service.

A 3G supporting phone and USIM is required for gaining access to 3G services. USIM is a SIM card for 3G services which stand for Universal Subscriber Identification Module. The storage capacity of USIM is 128 KB.

BSNL announced tariff plans for 3G mobile services under pre-paid and post-paid voice, video and data plans. The voice call will be available for as low as 10 paise per minute under full value Rs-1,000 plan, local SMS is at Rs10 paise per SMS under Super 1,350 plan.

Similarly, video calls would cost Re 1 a minute under the unlimited Rs-2,500 plan and Rs 2 for STD video calls. The newly launched service will offer up to data speed of 2 Mbps aver the GPRS.

With this great next generation service, you can create your own games on the net, create websites, pay utility bills; enjoy mobile banking, chatting and even upload user generated contents to internet.

JAGJITH SINGH CRITICISES A.R.RAHMAN

Music is an ecstasy. Musicians and singers are gifted personalities. We are fans of a lot of singers and musicians. Every singer has their own style of singing. Hariharan and Udit Narayan sung a lot of super hit songs. But both of them have their own style while singing a song. This unique style of singing may even cause some limitations for certain 'type' songs. But that doesn’t imply that they are not good up to the level. So it is utter foolishness to compare singers. Same is also applicable to Music Directors. Lot of Orkut communities and forums discuss this question.

A.R.Rahman or Illayaraja Who is best?

Die hard fans of both Rahman and Illayaraja merely engaged in finding the fault with their opponents. But the fact that both of them excelled in their respective fields and created evergreen songs. So what is wrong with the Gazal maestro “Jagjith Singh”?

“For ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, Rahman's music is not 'real music'; and he has challenged the Oscar nominated music composer to sing ghazals. Jagjit Singh accused Rahman of copying western tunes and giving a Indian touch to them. He also went on to criticize Gulzar for writing such lyrics and said that a man from such literary background should not write such ordinary songs.”

Even the opponents of Rahman agree that Rahman is a versatile music director. I think he had already composed a lot of Gazal type songs. But he never informs the press that he composed a Ghazal song. He never attacked any of his fellow music directors. He even admired the music of “Dil to Pagal Hai”. He gives complete freedom for even the new singers. It is this simplicity and politeness helped him to achieve higher goals in his entire career.

So the only thing we can understand from Jagajith Singh’s word is “pure jealousy”. So I think this is the apt reply for you, Jagjith Singh, the Only Gazal Maestro of World.

Finally A.R.Rahman won two Oscars for us. Many of the die hard fans of Rahman still believe that he should be given that prestegious award for his earlier songs. He already composed many astonishing songs which were far better than “Jai Ho”. I am not degrading the song “Jai Ho”. Every song of Rehman has blessed with lot of experimentation. “Jai Ho” is also an outstanding composition by Mozart of Madras. But there is a fact that fortune favours the brave. There is also a luck favouring for the song “Jai Ho”.

On the award winning day, like every fans of him I am searching for all the news about our maestro. Then it is from “Ravi Menon” a noted Malayalam music critic, I knew that the song “Jai Ho” was actually composed for the film “Yuvraj”. Though this Salman Khan starred film which is directed by Subhash Ghai bombed at the box office, the melodious songs captured mind of every music lover. According to Subhash Ghai there was no sequence for this song in the film Yuvraj,. So A.R.Rahman used this song for the Oscar winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” with written consent from Ghai. Rahman won the Oscar for the same song and luck favours the brilliant magical works of Rehman.

A.R.Rahman, the name even clarified as a symbol of scintillating music, finally won the great battle of OSCAR. Be proud that Rahman is an Indian and he is the first Asian musician to win two Oscars. He won oscar for best background score and for his song "Jai Ho". The millionaire of music from Madras achieved this highest goal at the age of 42. He has been nominated for three awards. One for Best music and two for songs, Jai Ho & Oh Saya
I first time heard his music in the 10th class youth festival. The song was “En Veetil Thottathil” from the Tamil Film” Gentle Man”. After hearing that song my mind was in ecstasy by the background music and rhythm of that song. I never care about music in those days. But after hearing that wonderful composition, I am really addicted to his music like every diehard fans of A.R.Rahman. Every his song is flourished with great background score.

Then a hobby is developing in my day to day life. I am forced to buy every film songs and compositions by A.R.R. I even watch many flop films only because of its music directed by rehman. I am a lover of both fast numbers and melodious tunes. I enjoyed “Telephone Money” and “Pacha Kilikal “from Indian in the same mood.

My aspect of Rahman’s music is here:

1. Most of his hit songs are starting with repeating words
“Mukkala Mukkabla, Urvasi Urvasi, Columbus Columbus., Soniya Soniya Chinna Chinna asai, like Tamil Hits.
Moula Moula (Delhi-6) Zindagi Zindagi (Yuvraj), latto latto (Gajini), Bar Bar , Mitwa (Lagan) and the list continues in Hindi.

2. Some of his songs at the first time may not impress us. By hearing two or three times, we will definitely like that songs and that songs will became our favourite ones.

3. Clarity of music is excellent. Every sound is as clear as a crystal. When hearing songs very carefully or with head phone we will discover a number of bit sounds. Now many musicians (like Harris Jeyaraj from Tamil) are imitating his style of music.

I personally like his attitude towards other musicians. I read that A.R.R admired Utham Singh’s work in “Dil To Pagal Hai”. Most of the musicians are very strict about their tunes, but ARR give complete freedom to singers. Another important quality of him is that he discovered many youthful talents, introduced them into film world by giving them hit numbers.

Unbreakable achievements:
1. ARR was the first artist to be signed by Sony in South-East Asia.

2. ARR was the first Indian Music Director to win the Golden Globe Award

Future achievements:
Let’s hope he will achieve these landmarks in the near future

Doubts about Rahman:

When he focused in Bollywood his Tamil Films reduced to a certain extent. Now after getting the Oscar, he is internationally noticed. So other Hollywood directors will definitely search for him. So we, Indians miss his blolywood/tollywood numbers in the near future?

SUN DTH E16 Error Message & Solutions

Most of the SUNDIRECT customers are now familiar with the E16 error message.
Added packages are not available after getting this error message. i.e. only Doordarsan Channels, Amritha, B4u, Etc will be shown in the miniscreen.

I have this problem on Sunday (15-02-09); I missed the fist 20-20 between Australia and New Zealand. I already subscribed for Star Cricket (Rs.32/ Month), Neo Cricket & Neo Sports (Rs.46/month). So desperately I dialed the toll free customer care number. Then dialed other customer care numbers of Kerala. But later I knew that all my efforts were only a mere time killing process. The result of each call was "Number Busy". Then on Monday, I contacted the local agency of SUN DIRECT, they told me to switch on the SUN channel (i.e. 100th channel) for 2 hours, the problem will be solved. I did so. But no more advantage by doing so..

Then on Tuesday I contacted them again. They asked my customer-id and I gave that number to them. In the evening of that day, I contacted them again; they said that the problem will be rectified soon as they mailed my customerid to the service centres.

Then I switched on the Sun channel for nearly 2 hours and after that I restarted SUN Direct. Fortunately that problem was solved, now all channels are available.

There is an option called “Reset Factory Settings" in the menu of SUN DIRECT. We can solve any problem related with improper use of remote and channels tuning by resetting the factory settings. A password will be asked for doing this task. Enter 0000 as password, then Dish will automatically search for all channels, all the problems related with channels will be rectified.

Customer support of SUN DIRECT should be improved; otherwise many desperate customers will opt for other DTH services

File Explorer is simple software to hide files in your mobile phones. This software effectively works with all Nokia handsets. In order to "hide" pictures/videos in the Gallery, install File Explorer in your mobile by downloading the same from any of the following links

Once you have downloaded and installed File Explorer, open File Explorer on your mobile and then select the appropriate directory in which the picture/video you want to hide is located. Usually the files in the memory card will be stored in the directory E

Go the picture/image/ Video that you want to hide.
Select Options-> File -> Set Attributes.

First of All, Hearty Congratulations to Alla Rakha Rahman for this global achievement.

Yes, A R Rahman has become the first Indian to win the prestigious Golden Globe Award for his score in “Slumdog Millionaire”. The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday is a proud moment for every Indian as A. R. Rahman won the prestigious GOLDEN GLOBE award in the Best Original Background Score category for the film 'Slumdog Millionaire’.

This is a wonderful achievement indeed by this talented, gifted music wizard of India and he had also won the Satellite Award for the same film. Hollywood music composers Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore and Danny Elfman have been impressed by the score Rahman has composed. They made some genuinely warm comments about Rahman's music. 'Mozart of Madras' shook hands with many as he went on to the stage to collect the award and the first word that came out of Rahman was 'Unbelievable' followed by a chuckle.

“Slumdog Millionaire” is based on a novel by Indian diplomat Vikash Swarup and stars Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan in lead among others. The film was directed by Danny Boyle who also won a Golden Globe for Best Director. The film won two other awards as well – Best Picture and Best Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy).

Now like every diehard fans of Rahman, we can’t wait for the Oscar nominations to be announced on 22.01.2009. Our Rahman is a now a hot favourite at the Oscars.

The untimely demise of H.Sridhar on December 1, 2008 will definitely disappoint the music lovers of India. The popular Sound Engineer from Chennai was the key role of several dashing hits of A.R.Rahman. From A.R.R’s first film “Roja” to the recent Jodha Akbar, Sridhar added flavour to rahman’s golden music works.

He started his career as a professional audiographer from 1988 and had engineered over 200 films. He worked closely with directors like Mani Ratnam, (Roja, Kannathil Muthamittar, Bombay, Ayitha Ezhuthu …etc) K Balachandar, Bharathiraaja, Shankar, P C Sreeram, Priyadarsan, Sibi Malayil and Ramgopal Varma.

Sridhar has been awarded the President's Gold Medal (The National Award for Best Audiography) twice: for the film Mahanadi in 1994 and for Dil Se in 1999. He also got the same for, Kannathil Muthamittar and Lagaan.

The diehard fans of A.R.Rahman have good familiarity with Sridhar since the duo excels every other musician with their team work. Sridhar engineered the correct sound equilibrium to the Mozart of Asia and they produced evergreen hits like Roja, Gentleman, Kadhalan, Thiruda Thiruda, Bombay, Duet, Rangeela, Muthu, Indian, Minsaara Kanavu and Iruvar.

His combination with Ilayaraja for the National Award Winning Malayalam film “Kalapani” was also stunning. He also engineered and mixed albums for international artists like George Harrison of The Beatles, John Neptune Kaizan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, L.Shankar and John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra & Shakti fame).
Having pioneered the use of Digital Sound for Indian films in the DTS format, Sridhar has successfully completed six-track surround sound mixing for more than 100 films including the 3D Malayalam film “My Dear Kuttichathan”.

Noted director Priyadarsan, who utilized Sreedhar’s creativity in his prestigious film “Kalapani” says: "He was the best sound engineer I have ever worked with; he pioneered the DTS format in the country"

But the sudden demise of this versatile genius will be an ultimate loss for the music maestro A.R.Rahman since his craftwork has given much freshness to A.R.R’s music.

Microsoft Word is a powerful and widely used application software for documentation purposes. To include mathematical equations in a word file we have to reinstall the MS Office Software using the CD. Choose the custom installation option for installing MS Office on your hard disk.

INTRODUCTION

While the word “Biometrics” sounds very new and “High -Tech”, it stands for a very old and simple concept: Human Recognition. In technical terms, Biometrics is the automated technique of measuring the physical characteristics or personal trait of an individual and comparing that characteristic or trait to a database for purpose of recognizing that individual.

Examples of physical characteristics used in Biometrics include:

· Chemical composition of body odor
· Facial features
· Features of the eye
o Retina
o Iris

· Finger prints
· Hand geometry

Examples of personal traits used in biometrics include:

· Handwritten signature
· Keystrokes/Typing patterns
· Voiceprint

Every person can be distinguished by these traits. So biometrics is best defined as measurable physiological and / or behavioral characteristics that can be utilized to verify the identity of an individual.

HOW BIOMETRIC SYSTEMS WORK ?
Biometric systems consist of both hardware and software; the hardware captures the salient human characteristic, and the software interprets the resulting data and determines acceptability. Practically all biometric systems work in the same manner. First a person is enrolled into a database using the specified method. Information about a certain characteristic of the human is captured. This information is usually placed through an algorithm that turns the information into a code that the database stores. When the person needs to be identified, the system will take the information about the person again, translates this new information with the algorithm , and then compares the new code with the ones in the database to discover a match and hence, identification.

For example, a guy’s fingerprint is scanned. An algorithm turns the fingerprint into a code which is stored in the database. Later, a person needs to be identified to gain access into an area.
His/Her fingerprint is scanned again. The system turns the fingerprint into a code. The code is compared with the other codes in the database. Look, the new code matches the code of a guy. The person must be Guy! Hence Guy is identified and allowed into the area.

BIOMETRICS METHODOLOGIES

The various Biometrics methodologies available now or should be available for the near future is the following:

1. Fingerprint Recognition.

Fingerprints have long been used as means of recognition. Current methods of fingerprints will, likely to be replaced by finger imaging, a technology that involves physically placing a finger on a small optical scanner. This “live” fingerprint is electronically read and converted into a unique byte code stored in a database which can be compared to other finger images for identification purposes.

A major advantage of finger imaging is the long time use of the finger print and its wide acceptance by the public and law enforcement communities as a reliable means of human recognition. Disadvantages of finger imaging includes the need for physical contact with the optical scanner, the possibility of poor quality images due to residue on the finger such as dirt and body oils as well as eroded fingerprints from scrapes, years of heavy labor, or mutilation.

2. Retinal Scanning
Retinal scanning involves an electronic scan of the retina – the innermost layer of the wall of the eyeball. By emitting a beam of incandescent light that bounces off the person’s retina and returns to the scanner, a retinal scanning system quickly maps the eye’s blood vessels pattern and records it into an easily retrievable digitized database. Since this pattern is unique in each person, identification can be precise.

3) Iris Scanning

Iris recognition uses the iris-the colored circle that surrounds the pupil of the eye-as the physical characteristics to be measured. The pattern of the iris is complex and unique in each person. Using standard video technology, its features can be quickly recorded from about nine inches away, thus eliminating the need for invasive physical contact. Software captures the identifying information from the iris and stores it in a 256 byte code.

Advantage of Iris recognition is that it stands out as perhaps the most “Hygienic” of the biometric technologies in that no part of the user’s body has to touch anything to operate the system. Disadvantages of iris recognition include problems of user acceptance, the relative expense of the system as compared to other biometric technologies, and the relative memory intensive storage requirements.

4. Hand Geometry.

Hand Geometry utilizes a three dimensional record of length, width and height of the hand and /or fingers. The subject places a hand in an optical scanner, measurements are taken, and the results are converted into byte code. In effect a digital map of the outline of the person’s hand is created.

Advantage of hand geometry is that it requires very little computer storage space as the memory requirements are limited and it is very user friendly. Disadvantages include the lack of uniqueness of hand geometry as compared to other biometrics. Also an injury to hand can cause the measurements to change, resulting in recognition problems.

5. Signature recognition

Signature recognition, or signature dynamics, uses computer technology to record components of an individual’s signature such as pen/stylus speed, pressure, direction in signature and the points at which the pen is lifted from the paper. These behavioural patterns are captured through a specially designed pen and compared with a template of process patterns.

Disadvantage of signature recognition include problems of long-term reliability, the lack of accuracy and cost.

6. Voice Recognition

Voice recognition involves taking the acoustic signal of person’s voice and converting it into a unique digital code which can be the stored in a template. In practical terms, the user would first enroll in the voice recognition system by speaking an agreed-upon phrase. For future recognition, the exact same phrase is spoken and the signal is analysed by the voice recognition system. Voice recognition systems are extremely well suited for verifying user access over a telephone.

Disadvantages of this biometric are that, not only is a fairly large byte code required, but people’s voices can change (for e.g.: when they are sick or in extreme emotional states). Also, phrases can be misspoken and background noises can interfere with the system

There are other biometric methodologies such as face recognition, vein measurement, keyboard dynamics and chemical odor analysis. These methodologies are currently under development. Of all these biological methodologies listed, only retinal scanning, iris scanning and finger imaging are currently considered truly consistent and unique. As such these three physical characteristics provide the greatest reliability and accuracy for biometrics.

APPLICATIONS OF BIOMETRICS

There are all manner of fascinating biometric applications already in use. To fathom the possibilities, here are some intriguing examples.

Airport Security

Passenger’s facial images are recorded on camera and encoded on boarding passes and baggage tags at Malaysia’s Kula Lumpur airport. Off goes your luggage, you hit snack bar and when you are ready to hop on the plane the system scans your face to verify you are who you say you are.

Computer Security

Instead of replacing the user name/password log-in system, keystroke dynamics technology measures typing rhythm-the length of time you hold down each key, plus the time you take to move between keys. Then when you type in your user name and password, the software compares your typing rhythm with your profile.

ATM Machine Use

Most of the leading banks have been experimenting with biometrics for ATM machine use and as a general means of combating card fraud. Customers of Nationwide Building Society in England may get their money through the use of biometric methodologies. The financial institution has piloted an iris recognition system at ATMs and the counter of one of its branches. A camera takes a digital record of each user’s iris, which is coloured portion of the eye. The iris print is stored in a database and is used to verify identity during transactions.

Other Applications

Biometrics technology is being considered for a number of other applications. Law enforcement agencies would benefit from biometrics because people would no longer be able to hide their true identities. Governments could use biometrics to replace driving licenses, social security cards, welfare registration, and current electoral polling methods. Other popular applications include physical access control to restricted areas along with most other types of security systems. It is quite easy to see the many possibilities for biometrics technology

DRAWBACKS OF BIOMETRICS

Several countries, including Australia, Canada, the United States and New Zealand, have witnessed public disquiet over identification schemes,. Some of the fears that have been cited include:

· That people will be de-humanized by being reduced to codes.
· That the system will enhance the power over individuals of particular organization and state.
· That the society is becoming driven by technology assisted bureaucracy, rather than by elected Government.

Privacy Issues

Medical Information

Biometrics scanning, whether based on the iris or finger image or other biometrics may prompt a variety of legal and policy concerns. Specifically, privacy concerns may be implicated because inn addition to the identification data, captured information about a person’s health and medical history may also be incidentally obtained. For e.g., through an examination of the retina or iris, an expert can determine that a patient may be suffering from common afflictions like diabetics arteriosclerosis, and hypertension.

Individuals with Special Needs

One topic which is rarely discussed in relation to biometrics is that of special needs of individuals. What consideration will be afforded to those who are unable to use such technology as the result of missing hands, limbs, or eyes? Certainly this is an issue of the technology which cannot be overlooked any longer by the industry.

CONCLUSION

Government will continue to be a hot market for biometric security, but experts see huge potential in the financial community and the medical industry. The security issues that haunt corporate IT and ecommerce make them obvious markets for biometric too.

The level of interest the government is giving to biometrics today helps the importance it foresees the role this technology will pay in the future.

Once the 1,380-kg Chandrayaan gets near the moon its speed will be reduced to enable the gravity of the moon to capture it into an elliptical orbit. Chandrayaan will orbit the moon for two years. It carries 11 experimental payloads, five Indian and six from the European Space Agency (3), the US (2) and Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1).

Google’s new Mobile Phone “Dream”

Finally the internet giant Google also entered into the mobile world with their first mobile phone running its Android software in a joint initiative with US mobile phone carrier T-Mobile. The phone named as Google "Dream Phone",” is seen as Google's answer to Apple's successful iPhone.

The Dream mobile phone will have a large touch screen, a full QWERTY keypad which either slides or swivels out from the body of the device and a trackball for internet navigation. Dream will also have a built- in 3 megapixel camera, a music player and purpose-built access to Google services like Gmail, Maps…etc.

The mobile uses Android as the operating system, challenging the Nokia's Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Apple's iPhone, but its open source nature has already gained enthusiasm among various mobile manufacturers.

The other songs, Chinnamma , Naan Epoudhu, (These two songs are the Tamil version of songs of the Hindi film "Meenkashi”), Elay,I Miss You Da should satisfy the fans of A.R.R.
